In the early Shōwa period, most of this country lived by self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
Especially in cold regions, the harsh climate pushed daily life to the brink, where not a single grain of rice or scrap of cloth could be wasted.
When the only garment one owned became worn through and let the wind pass, people patched the holes with whatever small pieces of fabric were available at that moment, layering them and stitching them down with sashiko thread.
Over time, these accumulated layers of cloth formed what is known as boro—textiles built up through years of necessity and repair.
This is the beauty of impoverished farming life, a beauty that is steadily disappearing.
By reconstructing this spirit, KOROMO has created this fabric.
The expressions of deterioration are crafted by teasing and distressing wool yarns, while the various traces of accumulated handwork are reproduced using every conceivable combination of threads and weaves.
The result is a textile with an overwhelming presence and depth.
Each piece offers a unique surface expression, and the hat is finished to be easy to incorporate as an accent, even with a simple outfit.
