Carp Swimming in Flowing Water — A Tenugui Inspired by Maruyama Ōkyo.
Along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, at the far end of a temple nestled deep in the mountains, beyond the point where the path seems to lead into the unknown, there was a pair of sliding doors adorned with a painting.
At another place, hanging near the exit of an art museum filled with grand, imposing masterpieces, was a small, aged hanging scroll.
Both paintings depicted carp, and both were works by Maruyama Ōkyo.
At first glance, they were nothing extraordinary: simple black carp swimming through flowing water, painted entirely in ink.
And yet, somehow, they possessed an extraordinary power to make people stop in their tracks and gaze at them, captivated. Even now, I still wonder what it is about these paintings that draws us in so completely.
It is said that Ōkyo did more than simply paint what he saw. By skillfully manipulating light and shadow, he gave his subjects a remarkable sense of depth and three-dimensional form.
Inspired by his work, we sought to capture that same quality in this design, using the subtle gradations of ink-wash painting to depict black carp swimming through flowing water.
Bringing this design to life required six separate printing blocks. Even when the colors appear almost identical, each shade has been carefully selected to create subtle variations in depth and dimension.
Created using te-nassen, a traditional hand-printing technique, this is a meticulously crafted tenugui towel that embodies the distinctive artistry of Koromo.
