So popular were the town firefighters that they were celebrated in the saying,
“Fires and fights are the flowers of Edo—and the finest of those flowers are the town firefighters.”
They were, in modern terms, heroes—symbols of justice admired by all.
The town firefighting system was formally established during the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. Its true architect is said to have been Ōoka Echizen-no-Kami, the magistrate of the Southern City Office.
At the time, there were sixty-four firefighting brigades, each distinguished by a unique decorative design mounted atop their matoi (standard).
These designs served as the emblem and pride of each brigade.
This jacket expresses those traditional matoi motifs through discharge printing on the pockets, while the motif at the chest is rendered in embroidery.
Made from the same fabric as the previously introduced pants, it offers exceptional softness and comfort.
We encourage you to wear it as a set with the matching pants and experience the refined spirit of Edo.
