Yet in works such as the Hyakki Yagyō Emaki, an illustrated scroll from the Muromachi period, these supernatural beings are sometimes depicted in surprisingly playful and humorous ways.
Introducing our Hyakki Yagyō Hanten Cardigan, featuring a procession of yokai that is both spine-chilling and delightfully comical.
The words “Hyakki Yagyō” are rendered in kakuji, a bold, angular style of lettering traditionally associated with Japanese hanten jackets. Across the back, a gathering of strange yokai emerges faintly from the darkness of the night.
The front features a kimono-inspired collar and simple pockets, keeping the design clean and understated.
Look closely, though… You may spot an adorable little yokai who seems to be calling all the others together.
