Karahana is an arabesque motif depicting an imaginary flower—one that does not exist in nature—adorned with leaves and buds, expressed in the flowing form of a climbing vine.
It is said to have originated in ancient Egypt, traveled across the Eurasian continent, and eventually made its way to Japan.
Because it is not tied to a specific season like cherry blossoms or chrysanthemums, it is easy to wear year-round.
Despite its simplicity, it carries an elegant sense of splendor, and for that reason, it is often seen in auspicious ceremonial garments.
This motif is rendered through meticulous satin embroidery.
Satin embroidery fills a surface by repeatedly stitching zigzag lines across a defined width. It is most commonly used to secure the edges of appliqué work, and is generally ill-suited to covering large areas.
For this reason, completing this embroidery required an extraordinary amount of time, as needle and thread slowly filled the surface stitch by stitch.
Simply wearing this lustrous satin embroidery feels as though it gently alters the very atmosphere of the space around you—
a piece with a quiet yet transformative presence.
