The ichimatsu pattern, famously adopted as the emblem of the Tokyo Olympics, is said to symbolize diversity—many cultures and nations coming together and expanding outward.

This pattern has endured uninterrupted for an astonishing length of time.
It has even been confirmed on ancient haniwa clay figures created in the distant past. Its longevity may well be due to its simple yet auspicious meaning, associated with prosperity and the rise of good fortune.

When we asked a factory in Okayama to produce this fabric, they remarked, “Ah, this is the Benkei pattern, isn’t it?”
When asked why, the answer was simply, “That’s what everyone around here calls it.”
Upon researching further, we found that during the Edo period, this pattern was frequently used in the costumes of kabuki actors portraying Benkei—an embodiment of strength and masculinity. From there, it came to be known as a representative pattern with a bold, crisp impression.

When this ichimatsu fabric is cut at the center of the pattern, it appears as though small pockets are lined up between the face and back layers.
This is because the two layers are woven together at the boundaries of the check pattern. As a result, the fabric feels gentle against the skin like gauze, while still retaining a moderate level of warmth.

Depicted here are the blossoms of an old plum tree, overflowing with vitality as they reach upward toward the sky.
They are embroidered in red and white, symbolizing life force and ascension.
