Sapporo, Otaru, Shiretoko, Furano…
These well-known place names in Hokkaido all originate from the Ainu language.
Even today, Ainu culture remains deeply rooted in Japan’s northern lands.

Ainu patterns, said to resemble those of the Sakhalin peoples, come in several variations, yet all share a common purpose: protection from evil. The sharp, curved motifs are designed so that even the smallest gaps prevent malevolent spirits from slipping through.

We have created a shirt boldly printed with an original interpretation of these traditional Ainu designs.
The Ainu people weave fabric from threads made of plants they gather from the natural world, which naturally results in earthy tones that express a grounded, organic character.
The soft colors and gentle texture evoke the spacious, serene way of life in the northern regions.
