A bodhisattva who watches over the people of all ten directions—north, south, east, west, the eight points, and even above and below—bearing eleven faces upon its head to ward off conflict and bring salvation.
This is the Kannon revered far and wide by people everywhere.
And this is what happens when that Kannon is taken over by yokai.
The serene face at the front is replaced by a three-eyed goblin grinning through a torn mouth, and the expressions that should be laughing away evil deeds have become comical, unsettling faces of yokai you’d rather not make eye contact with. One can easily imagine the scheming expressions of the yokai hidden on the back.
The material—rare for indigo, made from both wool and cotton yarn—is light yet warm.
When you take off your coat or jacket, will you smile… or will you be startled…
by the mischievous yokai peeking out from your back?
That is part of the fun.
