The noble bird—the phoenix—is said to perch only on the paulownia tree, rarely revealing itself. Yet, when a person of exceptional virtue or wisdom appears, it is believed to emerge from somewhere unseen and fly forth. This auspicious creature has long been regarded as a symbol of good fortune.

The combination of the paulownia and phoenix is famously associated with imperial garments and ornaments, and is also well known for having been favored in family crests by figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Sen no Rikyū.

During the Edo period, many watercolor-style depictions of paulownia and phoenix were created. However, rather than applying paint with water as is done today, artists would moisten paper or cloth and allow dyes or pigments on the brush to seep into the surface, completing the work in a single, fluid motion using a gradation technique. The naturally emerging soft hues and the gentle, warm texture could only be achieved through the spontaneity of the brush. The paintings, executed in a single breath with utmost concentration, carry a distinct sense of dynamism.

This shirt features an all-over pattern that faithfully recreates the expression of that era, combining the paulownia and phoenix with karakusa—an arabesque motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
Enjoy the contrast between the lustrous colors as if painted on pure white paper and the tones rendered on a slightly aged, light brown fusuma surface.
