Although I have no personal experience to confirm it, the Japanese giant salamander is said to have been named sanshō-uo (“pepper fish”) because the scent released from its skin resembles that of Japanese pepper.
Despite being an amphibian related to frogs and newts, it is curiously written with the character for “fish,” making it a rather peculiar creature.

In Kyoto, it is also designated a Special Natural Monument. After typhoons or periods of heavy rain, some are occasionally washed downstream from the mountain rivers near Kurama, traveling several dozen kilometers all the way to rivers running through the city center.

While blue chrysanthemums have only recently been developed, I suspect that no matter how many decades we wait, we may never encounter a blue giant salamander.
And perhaps that is how it should be.
