Clear and pure, the lotus blooming from the mud has inspired countless expressions. Yet writing that captures the beauty of a Nishikigoi swimming through a muddy pond is far less familiar.

In reality, the ponds used across Japan to enhance the color and growth of koi are not simply filled with soil. These “mud ponds” are clay-rich environments that trap toxins and pathogens, creating a natural condition where koi can grow strong and vibrant.

From such a pond, a simple Nishikigoi known as Kohaku—its red and white form—glides silently upward, appearing and disappearing as though a flower had quietly bloomed upon the water’s surface.

That fleeting image reveals itself through the openings of heavily distressed indigo-dyed fabric, glimpsed between the worn holes of the cloth.

This piece expresses the intense vitality of life struggling within the mud, along with the philosophy of wabi-sabi—a beauty found in imperfection, fragility, and the ephemeral nature of existence.
