“It is said that fires and quarrels were the pride of Edo, and the greatest pride of all were the town fire brigades.”
The men of these brigades were adored—heroes of justice in today’s terms.
The town fire brigade system was established under the 8th Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, and its true creator is said to have been Ōoka Echizen-no-kami, the magistrate of the southern district.
At the time, there were 64 brigades, each with its own distinctive design on the decorative crest worn at the top of their matoi (fire standard). These designs were symbols of identity and sources of great pride.
These pants feature a discharge-dyed matoi emblem placed on the back pocket.
At first glance it may look like sashiko stitching, but the fabric is actually a special variation-woven denim.
Because it is woven with a more intricate structure than ordinary denim, it is remarkably soft and exceptionally comfortable to wear.
A stylish and spirited matoi pattern— pants filled with the lively pride and swagger of the Edo townspeople.
