Fireworks that color the night sky have the power to move viewers so deeply that they can’t help but cheer aloud.
In Japan, it is said that the first person to look up at fireworks launched as a gift from the King of England was Tokugawa Ieyasu. As the era shifted from Toyotomi to Tokugawa rule and warfare came to an end, the demand for firearms declined. Gunpowder craftsmen, who were gradually losing their livelihoods, were ordered by Ieyasu to apply their skills to the creation of fireworks.
What makes Japanese fireworks so highly praised around the world is a distinctive moment of silence.
After they shoot up with a sharp hiss and just before they burst open in full brilliance, there is a brief pause where the sound disappears.
This fleeting interval is said to be a uniquely Japanese form of expression—something found nowhere else.
This piece captures the artistry of such fireworks across the entire back, expressed through discharge dyeing, hand-printed gradient effects, and hand-gesture embroidery.
Though it can never truly rival the fleeting afterimage of fireworks that vanish in an instant from the night sky, this is KOROMO’s firework— a special piece released only once a year.
