A small, old Japanese “Hanging scroll” was displayed near the exit of the museum. This is a painting of a carp by Maruyama Okyo, a renowned Japanese artist of the Edo period.
Rather than painting what he saw as it was, he is said to have manipulated shadows to give the creature a more three-dimensional appearance.
The carp depicted this year follows that approach, using tonal variations like those in traditional ink wash painting, and required six large woodblock plates to complete.

Although the colors may appear the same at first glance, we chose them carefully, expressing subtle differences and a sense of depth.

Although it doesn't have the elegance of a Nishiki carp, we made it into a lovable Shirt that can be worn for a long, long time.
