Long ago, in Higo Province—what is now known as Kumamoto—it is said that a mysterious glowing object appeared night after night in the sea. When a government official went to investigate after hearing these rumors, what emerged was a yokai, half human and half fish.

The creature introduced itself, saying, “I am Amabie, who dwells in the sea.” It then foretold, “For the next six years, abundant harvests will bless the land, but epidemics will also spread. Show an image of my likeness to the people without delay.” With that, Amabie returned to the depths of the sea.

From then on, Amabie came to be known as a yokai believed to ward off epidemics. Centered around this legendary figure, the garment’s creator envisioned a trio of yokai, brought together in this piece.

Using a lightweight mini French terry fabric—similar in feel to T-shirt material—we crafted a distinctive pullover shirt. The neckline design creates the illusion of a layered shirt beneath, resulting in a playful yet unique garment.
