Making use of rhythmic, beautiful curves, the arabesque (karakusa) pattern forms a continuous motif with no beginning or end, no fixed sense of up or down.
It naturally adapts to any given space, guided purely by the flow of imagination—and even today, it is hard to think of another pattern that surpasses its enduring appeal.

Although it has been used since the Asuka and Nara periods, karakusa was once considered a noble motif reserved for temples and shrines.
It was a pattern meant to be gazed upon rather than worn.

From the late Edo period onward, however, it began to be woven into hemp and cotton, and stencil-dyed onto yukata and chirimen fabrics.
Since then, it spread rapidly among the people, and its popularity has never waned.

This timeless classical motif now expands across the entire surface of a T-shirt as an all -over print— a pattern passed down through generations, still present in our lives today.
