Kyoto lies at the foot of Mount Hiei, home to Enryaku-ji Temple, often regarded as the birthplace of Japanese Buddhism.
In this city, it was once common to see Buddhist monks wearing white hoods known as hōshi, devoted to spiritual practice and guiding others along the Buddhist path.
The flowering tree known as Yamabōshi (Kousa Dogwood), which blooms in early summer, is said to have received its name because its appearance closely resembles those white hoods worn by the monks.
What appears to be a white, cross-shaped flower is actually not the flower itself. The true blossoms are the tiny flowers clustered at the center, appearing as pale green stamens.
To create this design, several sheets of traditional Ise washi paper are prepared, each marked with small registration points. Colors are applied separately to each section, layer by layer.
The carving and printing process requires careful alignment so that, when the final sheet is printed, a single complete image emerges. Ink is applied repeatedly to both sides, building the design through countless layers before the piece proceeds to the hand-guided embroidery process.
Compared to the Yamabōshi tree, often praised for being easy to grow and requiring little care, this Zimbabwe cotton T-shirt is the result of extraordinary craftsmanship and dedication.

※"TEBURI sewing" is a way of embroidery. A skilled artisan makes it with special sewing machine (moving only 1mm from side to side) by handling that sewing machine at will. The figure is just like painting picture. ※Please be aware that the below size conversions are approximate. The information in this table may vary based on design, material, etc. |
