Deep in the mountains along the tributaries of the Tenryū and Ōi Rivers, lumber workers devoted themselves to the arduous task of hauling timber.

One can easily imagine that, after a moment of rest and looking up toward the distant sky, they too would have found Mount Fuji standing quietly before them.

The composition is particularly striking: the rectangular picture plane is divided almost completely from corner to corner by a powerful diagonal line. This bold cropping technique reveals Hokusai’s distinctive sense of form, spatial design, and artistic balance.
