Since ancient times, the Japanese have found beauty in the changing seasons.
Much like cherry blossoms in spring or snow in winter, the gentle glow of fireflies has long been admired as part of nature's fleeting wonders.
Even in The Tale of Genji, the softly flickering light of fireflies is depicted through the aesthetic sensibility of mono no aware—an appreciation for the transient beauty of the world.
In years past, it was common to see countless fireflies each summer while walking a dog along the paths between rice fields at dusk. Today, however, their numbers appear to be declining year after year due to agricultural chemicals used after rice planting and the concrete lining of irrigation channels that have altered their natural habitat.
At KOROMO, we have long drawn inspiration from the delicate beauty of these drifting points of light, returning to the firefly motif year after year.
Their ephemeral glow, floating through the darkness like bubbles upon water, continues to captivate us.
And this year, we are pleased to present another firefly-inspired creation. Using our signature ID-twisted yarn, we have expressed the image of fireflies softly emerging from the darkness in a design that quietly captures their mysterious presence.
Incidentally, fireflies can still be seen within Kyoto City, where KOROMO is based. Well-known viewing spots include the Philosopher's Path and Kamigamo Shrine. Even so, their numbers continue to decline, and local residents and preservation groups work each year to help protect their habitat.
Fireflies have become an even more fleeting presence than before, relying increasingly on human care to survive. If you ever have the opportunity, we encourage you to seek them out and experience their quiet beauty for yourself.
