The Japanese words wazurau (to be troubled) and nayamu (to suffer or agonize) are combined to form the reading “Bonnō” . In Buddhism, bonnō refers to human desires, attachments, impurities of the mind, anger arising when things do not go as one wishes, and the self-centered thoughts that lead people astray. 

At the end of each year in Japan, temple bells are rung 108 times on New Year’s Eve in a ceremony known as Joya no Kane. Each toll symbolizes the cleansing of one of the 108 earthly desires, allowing people to enter the New Year with a purified heart.

This original creative kanji expresses that concept in a single character. It is a monumental composite character formed from numerous kanji elements, totaling 108 strokes, symbolizing the entirety of human worldly desires and the act of transcending them.
