As children, many of us probably remember gathering fallen leaves in all kinds of shapes, brushing paint onto the backs, and pressing them again and again across a sheet of drawing paper until it was filled with their impressions.

Inspired by those childhood memories, we took a beautifully opened lotus leaf and used deep sumi-ink tones to recreate the look of a leaf print across a white T-shirt. Before the ink had time to dry, a brush was used to gently blur and spread the color, creating the soft bleeding effect of ink on paper and giving the piece an elegant, distinctly Japanese atmosphere.

Swimming through the spaces between the lotus leaves are vivid red Wakin goldfish. Their flowing flashes of color provide a striking accent against the monochromatic ink tones, bringing the entire composition together.

With its expressive lotus leaves, subtle ink gradations, and red goldfish gliding through the scene, the finished piece has the quiet beauty of a traditional Japanese hanging scroll—a wearable work of art that captures a fleeting moment of summer.
