This season, we have featured this distinctive fabric in several of our pieces. It is woven from yarn that is dyed so the core remains white, much like denim.
Now, that fabric makes its appearance in a T-shirt designed to let you enjoy the beautifully uneven tones and fading that develop over time, giving it an increasingly vintage character.
Knowing that the body itself will take on a richer, more subdued character with repeated wear, we boldly covered the entire shirt with a bamboo grove landscape rendered in the style of traditional Japanese ink painting—a design with enough presence to become even more compelling as the fabric ages.
The design is first screen-printed by hand and then discharge-printed over the top. This creates intricate variations in the faded tones, while the multiple layers of color bring remarkable depth and richness to the overall expression.
And presiding over this mysterious bamboo grove is a nine-tailed fox, brought vividly to life by the skilled hands of a freehand embroidery artisan. With its striking presence, it almost looks ready to leap right off the shirt.
A few years from now, after countless wears and layers of aging, perhaps this T-shirt will have evolved into something resembling a well-aged Japanese hanging scroll.
