“Dragon and Tiger”

Originally rooted in the Chinese philosophy of the Four Directional Deities, the powerful figures of the Azure Dragon and White Tiger came to be favored and widely depicted within Japan’s samurai culture during the Sengoku period.

At “KOROMO,” we have explored many bold dragon and tiger motifs, but this particular interpretation intentionally softens their forms—rendering them rounded, humorous, and endearingly expressive.
The dragon, of course, is a mythical creature, and tigers did not exist in Japan in ancient times. Yet, numerous depictions of both remain. Considering that these images were born purely from the imagination of artists of the past, one cannot help but feel a deep sense of admiration.

This piece features a raglan-style three-quarter sleeve design, with a dragon and tiger facing each other across both sleeves. Colored stitching accents the neckline and side seams, adding a subtle yet distinctive detail.

There is a phrase, “like dragon and tiger locked in battle,” used to describe two evenly matched forces clashing fiercely.
But here, one can’t help but wonder—what kind of scene unfolds when these two rivals engage in such a playful, lighthearted duel?
