In the early Shōwa period, most people in Japan lived through self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
This was especially true in the severe climates of the northern regions, where daily life was harsh, and not even a single grain of rice or scrap of cloth could be wasted.
When the one precious garment someone owned became worn and allowed cold wind to pass through, they would patch the holes with whatever small pieces of fabric they had on hand, layering them and securing them with sashiko stitches.
Over time, these accumulated layers of cloth formed what is known as boro—textiles born from necessity and resilience.
This humble beauty shaped by the lives of impoverished farmers is steadily disappearing. To preserve and reinterpret that beauty, Koromo has recreated it in this fabric.
Areas meant to mimic deterioration are crafted by teasing wool threads, while portions that reflect accumulated handwork are woven using every possible combination of yarns and weaving techniques.
The result is a textile with powerful depth and presence.
This is a relaxed, long coat. Wear it as if you were draping yourself in Japanese culture.
※ Although the model shown is female, this coat is designed as a unisex garment suitable for all genders.
