In the early Shōwa period, many people in Japan lived by self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
In harsh, cold regions especially, daily life was shaped by the severe climate, and resources were treated with the utmost care. Clothing was precious, and even the smallest piece of fabric was valued.
When a well-worn garment began to thin and let the cold wind pass through, it was carefully repaired using small scraps of cloth at hand. Layers were added, and the fabric was reinforced with sashiko stitches. Over time, these repeated acts of mending formed what is known as boro—textiles born from necessity, ingenuity, and the quiet beauty of repair.
This humble yet powerful aesthetic, rooted in everyday life, is gradually fading from modern society.
To honor and reinterpret this tradition, Koromo has created an original fabric inspired by boro.
Areas that evoke natural wear are expressed by teasing wool threads, while sections that suggest layered handwork are woven using a wide variety of yarns and techniques. The result is a textile with remarkable depth, texture, and presence.
This is a relaxed long coat.
Wrap yourself in Japanese culture.
※Although the model shown is female, this coat is designed as a unisex piece and can be worn by anyone.
