Japanese clothing has long been characterized by the ideas of layering, wrapping, and creating a sense of ease and spaciousness.
Rather than simply reproducing the traditional form of a haori, this jacket has been designed to blend naturally into contemporary everyday life.
Across the back of its relaxed silhouette is a dynamically depicted lion. Powerful yet contemplative, its gaze seems to watch the passing and changing of time.
Rather than simply representing traditional Japanese aesthetics, it seems to quietly reflect on what it means to wear something new.
For the beige version, the lion is defined with bold outlines reminiscent of *kumadori* makeup, while the interior is softly blurred using water and ink.
The natural bleeding and subtle variations in tone create a sense of depth and dimension.
The black version is created using a colored discharge-dyeing technique, in which the original color of the fabric is removed while new color is added to form the lion.
This technique has its roots in traditional Japanese *tsutsugaki* resist-dyeing methods.
Each piece is individually finished by hand by skilled artisans, giving every jacket its own unique character.
We hope you enjoy the subtle differences and individual expression found in each piece.
