The phoenix, an auspicious and noble bird, is said to perch only on paulownia trees. Though it rarely reveals itself, legend has it that it will appear from somewhere when a person of exceptional virtue or wisdom emerges.

This pairing is famously associated with imperial garments and ornaments, and is also known to have been favored as a family crest motif by figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Sen no Rikyū.

During the Edo period, many watercolor-style depictions of paulownia and phoenix were created. However, unlike modern watercolor techniques that apply paint with water, artists would first moisten paper or fabric, then allow dyes or pigments on the brush to seep into the surface, completing the work in a single motion using a blurring technique.

The naturally emerging soft hues and gentle warmth of these colors could only be achieved through the spontaneity of the brush, and the paintings—finished in one breath with intense concentration—possessed a remarkable sense of movement and vitality.

This all-over patterned shirt recreates that historical expression, combining paulownia and phoenix with arabesque vines, symbols of longevity and prosperity.

Enjoy the contrast between the vivid, lustrous colors as if painted on pure white paper, and the tones rendered on a slightly aged, light brown background reminiscent of traditional fusuma sliding doors.

A gently textured, soft fabric. Simply placing it lightly around your neck adds both elegance and a touch of sophistication to your outfit.

Lightweight and easy to handle, it’s a versatile piece that’s perfect for seasonal transitions and protection against air conditioning.
