This garment is said to have been named for its distinctive shape: it has no sleeves, and the back is integrated like a cape. When both arms are spread, the silhouette resembles the wings of a tonbi (black kite) in flight.

During the Meiji era, when Japan was transitioning from traditional kimono to Western-style clothing, this form was also devised to allow the wearer to move more easily, without the wide kimono sleeves getting in the way. Inspired by that structure, this lightweight coat is created by boldly draping a piece of fabric and leaving the natural folds formed by the drape, secured simply with two buttons.



The slightly uneven appearance on the surface of the fabric comes from ink being sprayed only onto the outer side. The original color remains faintly visible only on the reverse, as the ink almost completely conceals the base color on the front.

Like the veil of night slowly descending, gently softening the outlines of everything in view, the color quietly wraps the wearer in a calm and subdued darkness.
