In the early Shōwa period, most of Japan lived through self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
This was especially true in the harsh climates of the northern regions, where life was difficult and not even a single grain of rice or scrap of cloth could be wasted.
When the one precious garment a person owned became worn and allowed the cold wind to pass through, they would patch the holes using whatever small pieces of fabric were available, layering them and securing them with sashiko stitches.
Over time, these accumulated layers of cloth formed what is known as boro—textiles born from necessity and endurance.
This humble beauty created by impoverished farming communities is steadily disappearing.
To preserve that beauty, Koromo has recreated it in this textile.
Areas meant to express deterioration are crafted by teasing wool threads, while the portions that represent accumulated handwork are woven using every possible combination of yarns and weaving techniques.
The result is a fabric with overwhelming depth and presence.
This jacket features the traditional Japanese collar—known worldwide for its elegance and long-standing cultural significance in Japan.
The hem gradually lengthens toward the back, where a soft, gentle flare spreads like a wave, creating graceful and refined movement.
