Sashiko fabric, which has evolved alongside the history of Japanese martial arts, is known for its powerful and enduring appearance—one that has remained largely unchanged over time.
At the same time, it is such a stubbornly robust textile that it is hard to imagine how people in the past managed to wash and wring it by hand.
Preserving that traditional character while reworking the fabric structure, we developed a new type of sashiko textile.
This original fabric was created in collaboration with a factory in Okayama, a region renowned for its expertise in indigo dyeing and denim production.
Two different shades of indigo are layered and woven together for the face and back, forming a diamond sashiko pattern.
The layers are joined with thick threads, creating natural volume and depth.
The result is an exceptionally soft, lightweight bonded sashiko fabric.
With repeated washing, the threads gradually bloom, allowing air to be trapped between the two layers—providing the distinctive warmth unique to bonded construction.
The embroidery that complements this material is a single-point crane motif.
A design that pairs beautifully with a fabric so deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.
