Zazza, zassa… pan, pan, pan…
Unlike the nostalgic clatter of old shuttle looms—gatan-goton—the sound of a modern high-density loom is sharp and rhythmic, echoing with a different kind of life.
While many of KOROMO’s yōkai are born in Kyoto after two in the morning, this particular yōkai came into being deep in the mountains of Banshū. With an unusual red warp thread already set on the loom, we were invited—“Shall we weave something with this?”—and by fortunate chance, this red yōkai fabric was brought to life.
Woven into the jacquard are a lively gathering of yōkai:
Ittan-momen’s child, Nurikabe, Kasa-obake, the female Shinigami, Zashiki-warashi, Uwan, Umibōzu, Hitotsume-kozō, the nine-tailed fox, Mitsume, Yabure-chōchin, and Nurarihyon.
The tunic dress features a well-balanced length and an A-line silhouette that gently flares toward the hem. Though it has no traditional sleeves, the shoulder width is carefully extended to the point where the shape remains elegant, finished with facing to create a sleeve-like form.
The neckline is finished with a band collar that softly follows the line of the neck, standing neatly with a small folded edge. This detail lends the piece a mature impression without feeling overly casual.
A yōkai jacquard creation designed to quietly command attention—one that inevitably draws the eyes of those who pass by.
