“Hakeme Tamamushi” is the name of this uniquely woven fabric. As the name suggests, the weaving technique creates patterns that resemble brushstrokes, achieved by using fine warp and weft threads in different colors.
The finished cloth changes its appearance depending on the angle of the light, producing a smooth, refined luster reminiscent of silk fabrics. This shimmering effect resembles the wings of a jewel beetle, which is how the fabric earned its distinctive name.
Although the haneri (inner collar) is only slightly visible, it enhances the elegance of the neckline. To harmonize with the colors of the flowers along the hem, a small peony motif is delicately embroidered onto it.
On the bold back panel featuring a dynamic catfish, numerous flowers are hand-embroidered, resulting in a uniquely striking and vibrant one-piece dress that stands proudly alongside even the most ornate furisode kimono.
Whether worn loosely as it is, or with a belt to create a more structured silhouette, this garment embodies the essence of Japanese clothing—completed by the individual who wears it.
