In the early Shōwa period, most people in Japan lived by self-sufficiency and local production for local consumption.
This was especially true in harsh, cold regions where the severe climate made daily life difficult, and not even a single grain of rice or scrap of cloth could be wasted.
When the one precious garment a person owned became worn and let the cold wind pass through, they would patch the holes using whatever small pieces of fabric they had at hand, layering them and securing them with sashiko stitches.
Over the years, these accumulated layers of cloth formed what is known as boro—textiles born from necessity and endurance.
This humble beauty from the lives of impoverished farmers is steadily disappearing.
To preserve and reinterpret it, Koromo has created this fabric.
Areas meant to resemble wear and deterioration are made by teasing wool threads, while the portions that express the many layers of handwork are woven using every imaginable yarn and weaving technique. The result is a textile with overwhelming depth and presence.
These wide pants feature a silhouette with a slightly lowered visual weight—a style that has become more common as wide-legged designs continue to evolve to gracefully cover the lower body.
