When working with indigo dye, there are moments when people are startled upon seeing your hands as you reach for your wallet at a shop. Those who practice ink painting experience this even more strongly—often teased by friends for having blackened nails despite an otherwise neat appearance. For women especially, such remarks can be painful. Ink is something that will not come off, no matter how much you scrub.

As seen in the Shōsōin Repository in Nara, where characters drawn with ink over a thousand years ago remain unfaded to this day, the combination of soot and animal glue (nikawa) is remarkably resilient.
Using the gradation and blurring unique to ink with great care, all unnecessary elements were stripped away to depict peony flowers—now boldly expressed as an all-over pattern.

Printed in nothing but black and white onto soft jersey fabric, these peonies possess a depth that rivals even the flower’s naturally rich spectrum of colors. Though peonies are known for their vibrant hues, this monochrome expression holds its own, creating a quietly captivating presence.
This cut-and-sewn tunic features a gently rounded hem that is slightly longer at the back, offering subtle coverage for areas of concern while maintaining a clean and elegant silhouette.
