Though not a large or flamboyant orchid, it is a flower long cherished in Japan as an essential symbol of spring celebrations.
In the years just after the war, cultivating these orchids was considered difficult, and as countless new varieties were created, investors eagerly competed to grow them, with potted plants sometimes trading for many times their original value.
Over time, celebratory orchids became associated with grander, more extravagant blooms, and the quiet charm of the Spring Orchid — blooming modestly beneath the shelter of its leaves — gradually faded from view.
Yet it remains a flower with remarkable presence.
Even when placed on a distant shelf at the back of a flower shop, it somehow still seems to shine and quietly assert itself.
With that image in mind, we expressed this flower from the shoulder down through discharge dyeing and hand-guided embroidery, allowing it to glow softly beneath a hazy spring moon.
The softly squared, fluttering sleeves are inspired by traditional kimono shapes and are known as flare sleeves. They gently cover the upper arms while also thoughtfully concealing undergarment lines when the arms are raised — both graceful and practical in design.
The body is made from an indigo-twisted yarn cut-and-sew fabric, a material that deepens and changes in character the more it is worn.
